“This book is a plea for civility and kindness in our troubled times. Imagine the benefits of common courtesy to your family, God’s family, and the human family as a whole. What is the secret? More thoughtfulness. Just consider one another. This mental shift accounts for a remarkable increase in satisfying relationships. Considerateness is a basic Christian skill that anyone can learn and practice” – Aubrey Johnson.

For some of our classes I have used brother Johnson’s books in past years. The Barnabas Factor, God’s Game Plan, Renewing Your Spiritual Life, and Spiritual Patriots have each provided wonderful studies. It wasn’t long ago that we hosted Aubrey for seminars on deacons and elders. We have him booked for a gospel meeting this year.

The book, Consider One Another, should provide a very interesting and helpful study. We are watching the increasing effects of a decaying and dying society. Barbarity is in the streets, in our homes and sometimes in the congregations of God’s people. The abandonment of God’s Word and moral principles have wrecked nations before. It will do so again. Until people come to their senses we will have more of what we have been having. We need much more than public service announcements to be kind to one another, show love and be considerate. Civility is but a thin veneer if it is grounded in nothing but civic consciousness.

Incivility is not merely a problem for society. It is a problem for families and churches as well. “Without courtesy, people become callous and cruel. They lose access to the higher, spiritual functions of the brain. When the capacities for empathy and kindness are diminished, flesh overtakes the spirit, and sin vanquishes the soul” (pg. 2). We need this study for our personal benefit, for our family’s wellbeing (if not survival), and the strength of the Mabelvale church during this pandemic.

All Comers class will begin February 22nd. I am looking forward to what this study group provides for each of us who are involved. The joy of fellowship. The comradery of shared investigation into spiritual things vital to us all. Again, we will meet in the All-Purpose room. For this session I have decided to teach all the classes myself. I will utilize Wayne Brewer and Daniel Webster for those times when I must be out. Perhaps in the fall we will return to shared teaching responsibilities.

I would like for those who intend to be in the class to get a copy of the book before we begin. If one copy per family will work for you that will help insure that we have enough books to go around. Please check with Linda Minor after morning worship services on Sunday, February 6th, 13th or 20th to secure your copy of the book. This is will allow you to read the first lesson in preparation for the start of class on February 22nd.
